BLEEDING CONTROL / SHOCK MANAGEMENT
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:
- Takes or verbalizes body substance isolation
- Applies direct pressure to the wound
NOTE: The examiner must now inform the candidate that the wound is still bleeding
- Applies tourniquet and elevates the extremity
- Demonstrates initial assessment
- Demonstrates vital signs assessment
NOTE: Examiner must modify vital signs to mimic hypoperfusion
- Ensure that advanced life support (ALS) has been requested and monitor response time
- Demonstrates the administration of high concentration of oxygen
- Properly positions the patient
- Initiates steps to prevent heat loss from the patient
- Indicates the need for immediate transportation
CRITICAL CRITERIA:
- Did not take or verbalize proper body substance isolation precautions
- Did not administer high concentration oxygen
- Did not control hemorrhage using correct procedures in a timely manner
- Did not recognize hypoperfusion
- Did not indicate a need for immediate transportation
